It turns out that I had enough grey for the sashing. Hurray!!!
This morning I worked on making a border using the rest of the ties. Unfortunately, I don't like it. I think that all the color detracts from the pinwheels.
Problem is that w/o those borders, the quilt is only 45" square. And I'll need to make a second quilt to use the strips, but it will also have to be small and/or combined with cotton fabric.

I like seeing the same fabrics in the border. I hope you can find a way to use them.
I know what your mean about taking away from the pattern; but I must say I do like it.
Hmm, I can see your dilemma. I hope you find a solution quickly.
Maybe another darker border before the piano key border would work??
Hi! I agree with Janet! Maybe some blue or red, or a combination of both. A lovely quilt!
Do you have enough tied fabric left to fill in if you take all the red ad blue strips out of the piano key border and add light fabrics in the piano key border. Maybe a multi or a pink outside cornerstones.
You have alot of blue and red throughout the border, so you don't have definition, other than the grey or the darker colours bordering the pinwheel blocks.
Hope this helps,
Take care, Leslie
Hmmmm ... I think I can understand why you are not 100% happy with the piano key border. My suggestion would be: could you take the green and yellow pieces out? That would calm it down (I think) ?
I too like the fabrics in the border. What I suggest is that you border the pinwheels with something wide and dark that will "stop the madness". Then since you wouldn't have enough of the silk border as is, slice those border strips in half the long way and apply them as a pieced outer border before you go to a binding. I think it will allow them to stay but tone them down. I don't think you will mind the leftovers so badly, but if you really wanted to use them up they would make a nice little wallhanging for an auction, etc.
I had the same problem last year with a piano key border. The way I solved it that I used the same color fabrics next to each other to make a section look just blue or just red. It calmed it down and did not take away from my center . I love the quilt top, the grey sahing is just perfect.
